Caregiving Story

Dorthy Robbers, My Neighbor

Location:Tarzana, CA
Cared for by:Lui Kodames
Years of Care:6

I was about 19 years old when my neighbor's son (David) died from a heart attack. He was about 50 years old at the time and she was about 84 (Dotty). I was a friend of his and really liked him as a person. My relationship with Dotty was generally based at the steel linked fence separating our properties. That all changed when David passed.

I remember it was summertime and I was looking for a job. I had experience gardening and was willing to learn more. Long, long story short...I ended up taking her destitute backyard and spending weeks revamping it by setting up sprinklers and a timer with all her favorite kinds of flowers...even a lemon tree per her request.

We became best friends after that. I would help with anything she need at any time. I loved Dotty. When I moved, I still came down specifically to visit her. Time passed and our relationship was amazing. She passed at 91 years old and let me tell you, she enjoyed every bit of it. God Bless her heart.
