Caregiving Story

Betsey Rotter, My Client

Location:Chicago, IL
Cared for by:Carmen Matos
Years of Care:25

I took care of Ms. Betsey Rotter by feeding her, dressing her and bathing her. I changed her diapers, and I would groom her hair and paint her nails. I would take her out to the park. She loved to be out in the summer and go for a stroll in her wheelchair. She liked to watch the birds flying, and she loved the flowers. She new all the names of the flowers, even though she could only see out of one eye. But, she sure could see everything through that one eye. She also had a good appetite. She loved to wear pretty clothes. She loved it when I sang to her. I would brush, trim, and curl her hair on a daily basis, and she loved to get her hair done. She always got compliments from everyone in the senior home where she lived. For her 108-year-old birthday, she slept right through her birthday party, even when there were reporters and news cameras present to take her story and videotape her party for the news.

She recently passed away, living to be 108! But my memories of being her caregiver will stay with me forever.
