Ask The Expert: Can I find out if a community has received any violations?

It depends on the type of community.  Nursing homes are highly regulated and in many states, you can log onto their department of health website and read about any violations they may have had in the past few years.

Assisted living is not so easy.  It is customary that any property should have readily available a copy of all of their state reviews and violations. When you are touring a community it is OK to ask to see these documents and they should show them to you.  It would also be a huge red flag if they were unable to produce the documents as requested.  And while the violations are not listed online, you may be able to call your state department of health and get the information over the phone.

Independent living buildings are not regulated, so you may want to check in with the local Better Business Bureau to see if there have been any complaints filed against them.
