Step 1: Is the Senior Receiving Medicare or Medicaid?
Note: Medicare DOES NOT Pay for Long-term Care but will pay for up to 100 Days in a Nursing Home.
Medicaid replaces
Medicare for very low-income seniors with few assets, but seniors with high care needs could spend-down to qualify for Medicaid benefits.
Medicaid DOES PAY FOR A NURSING HOME on-going in most states which means you should research the senior's assets to plan ahead when acute care needs are required.
You also should research nursing homes accepting Medicaid and remember that some Medicare-only
nursing homes will keep a private-pay resident if they spend-down to qualify for Medicaid and this could result in a better
quality nursing home - plan ahead and research nursing home costs and ratings in your area.
Step 2: If the Senior is on Medicaid, the Low-Income Senior Health Insurance, or Could Spend-Down to Qualify for Medicaid:
Learn About the Medicaid Financial Requirements in your State (Medicaid varies by State as it is Funded by Both State and Federal Money)
Learn About the Medicaid Benefits in Your State
Step 3: Does the Senior Desire Home Care or Moving to an Assisted Living Community?
Home Care is licensed and regulated in each state and costs between $16 and $26 per hour.
Assisted Living Communities usually cost a minimum of between $2,500 and $4,000 per month which DOES NOT include a caregiver.
Submit this form to receive costs and plans from home care agencies in your area.
Step 4: What Medical Conditions Have Been Officially Diagnosed for the Senior?
(Some Assisted Living Communities have Certain Requirements for Admissions and if Memory Loss is Present, which Type of Memory Loss; Lewy Body, Frontal Lobe Dementia, Frontotemporal Dementia, Vascular Dementia, Alzheimer's Disease, or memory loss as part of Parkinson's Disease or Huntington Disease or medications? As this makes a difference based on admission requirements and services available at assisted living communities. Is the senior still "active" as some assisted living communities also require this for admission.
Step 5: Does the Senior have Hearing Loss or Vision Loss?
Are these conditions contained or continuing to evolve? (i.e. Macular Degeneration can eventually cause blindness which requires additional care services).
Step 6: Are there local Supported-Living or Community Care Programs?
Contact Your Local Department of Aging Area Office on Aging to Find Out
Step 7: Is the Senior or their Spouse the Veteran of a War Which Qualifies for Veteran's Aid & Attendance Home Care Benefit?
Review wars which qualify for this veteran's benefit. A doctor's approval is required and if you are already receiving care a Veteran's hospital, ask their social worker for assistance with the paperwork. Qualifying veteran's receive home caregiving services.
Step 8: If the Senior or their Spouse is a Qualifying Veteran, do they Prefer to Move to a Veteran's Nursing Home?
If so, research veteran's nursing homes nearest you and find out if they have a openings or a waiting list. Be aware some veteran's homes only admit men.
The veteran's nursing homes are labeled VET in the Caregiverlist nursing home directory.
Step 9: If the Senior has Acute Care Needs or is on Hospice Care (less than 2 years to live), Research Nursing Homes Near You:
Medicare provides for some Hospice care benefits both in the home and in a care facility - research nursing homes near you.
