What is Cultural Competency Training

This six-hour Nevada Cultural Competency training program shows that caregivers provide better care when they notice how culture, bias, and barriers in the system shape each patient’s experience. They must keep listening, reflecting, and learning from their interactions with patients.

Nevada Administrative Code 449.011931 requires home health agencies to provide approved cultural competency training within 90 days of hiring or contracting with an employee and at least once every two years thereafter. Training provided every two years must include a minimum of two hours of instruction.

Nevada Cultural Competency Training is required training for certain staff in Nevada-licensed health facilities. The training helps employees better understand and support patients and residents from different cultural backgrounds, including differences related to race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, disability, and other lived experiences. Nevada requires licensed health facilities to use an approved cultural competency training course.
The requirement applies to certain agents or employees of covered Nevada-licensed facilities who have direct patient or resident contact at least once each week as part of their regular job duties. It also applies to employees who oversee those staff members.
Covered agents or employees must complete approved cultural competency training within 90 days after being hired or contracted. After the initial training, the training must be completed at least once every two years.
Nevada requires cultural competency training at least biennially, which means once every two years. Biennial training must include at least 2 hours of instruction each biennium.
Not every employee is automatically included. NRS 449.103 applies to agents or employees who provide clinical, administrative, or support services and have direct patient or resident contact at least once weekly as part of their regular job duties. It also applies to employees who oversee those workers.
Yes. Nevada-licensed health facilities must use a cultural competency training course approved in accordance with Nevada requirements. Facilities may use an approved third-party course or submit their own course for approval.
