Nursing homes have become an extension of a hospital stay for seniors rehabilitating from a major medical incident, such as a stroke or hip-replacement. Medicare will pay for a portion of nursing home costs, upon pre-approval, for up to 100 days. Medicaid pays for on-going stays in nursing homes accepting Medicaid.
