Caregiving Story

G. Barnes

Hello there, I would like to share my story with you. I am new to your website, and I am so happy that someone has a website like this so others can read about the joys of caregiving.

My story started about three years ago, when I was with a wonderful family. I was taking care of an elderly lady (84) who lived with her daughter and her son-in-law. I was working the evening hours and had been with this family for two years. We were like one big family.

Then one day my friend became very ill. She stopped eating, drinking, and she stayed in bed for the last two weeks of her life. I worked with Hospice to make her comfortable and to watch over her. Two weeks after she became ill, I was with her from 8p.m. to 6:30 a.m. every evening.

One evening I went to make sure she was dry, and to turn her so she would not get any bed sores. I heard her breathe deeply, she lifted her arm, and then she was gone. I felt for a pulse, and checked her breathing and there was none. I awoke her daughter who had slept downstairs that evening because she felt her mother would be passing soon.

She called her family together, made arrangements for her mother, and then we sat from 1:00am to 6:00am just talking and remembering the person who we cared for and had now gone home.
