Caregiving Story

Bertha Simonson and others

Bert had lost Cleo, her husband, a few years before she began showing signs of an altered reality. I stayed with Bert during the late afternoon into the evening, when another caregiver arrived to stay the night.

Mostly, we talked. I fed her dinner and helped her get to the bathroom. She was unsteady on her feet, but when treated graciously, was more than willing to tell stories about the old days, about her parents, her life as a child. We had many good conversations where she would laugh and joke. I wrote down a lot of what she said. I don't know if I have it anymore.

Sometimes, Bert would get angry and feisty and demand to know where Cleo was and it was difficult to get her to settle down. She would get mixed up and say Cleo was going to pick her up.

But all in all, I enjoyed my time with her.
