Caregiving Story

Alice Holland

I was extremely close to my grandmother. We use to do all kinds of things together. It was very gradual that I noticed her slipping away. I didn't want to believe that this woman would never be the same again. I would say that it took about ten years before my grandmother's Alzheimer's disease became apparent. It was very scary!

It got to the point where when we visited her, we would see a lot of cuts on her and bruises too. We would also see that she would forget to turn the stove off. She was not eating right because she basically forgot how to prepare meals. I did not want her to go into a home, unless it was my home. She lived with us for three years....it was not easy!!! She now is in a home because it got so bad she needed more than I could give.
