Caregiving Story

Mrs. Florence Miller

I only knew Mrs. Miller for less than 3 months, but grew to love her in that short amount of time. I lived with her 4 days a week so she was like family to me. She was a very stern Jewish woman who spoke her mind, until her dementia got the best of her. She could also be the most hilarious woman I've ever known at times.

"Faye", as her family and friends called her, developed a serious infection that caused her health to deteriorate rapidly, and eventually she was unable to do anything for herself. This was hard for her, as she was always very independent when she was younger.

Faye and I developed a special bond and eventually she would curse me when it was time for me to go home for the week. She called me her "Doll" and always told me she loved me when I left. The day Mrs. Miller passed away was the worst day of my life to date. She died in her sleep and looked so peaceful, but I was crushed. I had lost the closest thing to a grandmother I had in 15 years. I only hope that one day I will have the pleasure of caring for someone as sweet and memorable as Mrs. Faye Miller. I miss her so much.
