Caregiving Story

Harriet

I worked in a skilled facility for 7 years taking care of up to 14 seniors at a time. Although the work was hard it was very rewarding. I became very attached to several of the residents and looked forward to the time I was able to spend with them.

I began going to that same facility when I was a child. My mom had worked there for 18 years. My favorite was Harriet. I remember that because of her illness she was unable to speak very well. She and I had such a connection that I understood every word she said. I was only 9. I began working at that facility at age 21. It had been about 12 years since the last time i had seen Harriet, but she was still there and to my surprise she still remembered me.

I have since moved away but my mom keeps me informed of how she is going and I always send my love her way.
