Caregiving Story

Merla Brenner

Ms. Brenner has Alzheimer's. I cared for her a short while, but it seemed like forever. I would find myself reminding her as to whom I was. Once I did so, she would reply, "Oh yes, my cousin from the farm." I never told her otherwise; this brought trust to our relationship. Ms. Brenner would share many stories with me about her parents and her sister. She is the kindest person I have ever met. She would always say how kind I was to her, and how no one had ever given her so much attention. Ms. Brenner is a strong woman. When giving her bed baths, she would assist as much as possible. I told her to relax, because when I was caring for her, she didn't have to worry about lifting a finger. I now visit her as much as possible. Thank you for allowing me to share.
