Caregiving Story

Mercedes Harris

My grandma was diagnosed with high blood pressure, muscle spasms, arthritis and tendonitis in her knees over the past couple of years. At the age of 5-years-old, I moved in with her. The first couple of years my Grandma was as heathy as could be. But when I turned 8-years-old, that is when all of her health issues started to occur. She has always been a sweet, caring lady as a Mother of 10 children. But none of her children had much time to spend with her. So it has always been my responsibility to make sure I clean, cook, and take care of her since she wasn't able to do so for herself. She is a lady of great pride and it now has become additional work for me to make sure her medications are managed and she takes them appropriates. She is now 69-years-old and going strong and to this day I am still responsible for her, as her granddaughter and caregiver.
