Caregiving Story
Grandmother

I would have to say...the most rewarding experiences I've had are when I've either visited my Grandmother every week until she passed away and working at Tabor Hills, a nursing home. My grandmother used to say to me..."David...you are my favorite Grandson. Your Grandfather was very proud of you." When I would visit she would make me toast with jam, peaches, cereal, and milk. Even though I am lactose intolerant, I would drink the milk. Oh...did I suffer. But the reward was wonderful. As I would walk down the sidewalk to the bus, I would turn and see my Grandmother's face in the window. So tiny. I would walk a few more steps and turn again and wave. And again...and again. Her face was so content. Her thick glasses were held up by her little nose. She just smiled as I walked away. Each week I went to spend the night with her. When she was laying in the hospital bed, in a coma...everyone was crying. They couldn't understand why I was not. I knew and she knew. It was time to go. I had no remorse, no sadness, I do not miss her. For she is with me wherever I go. I know that.
