Caregiving Story

My Dear Friend

I work as a Caregiver, and have worked a lot with elderly who had Alzheimer's and Dementia. I have also worked with those who just needed encouragement to do things for themselves when they could. It was such a wonderful experience. It was a great learning experience, as well. I loved how I got to make a close relationship with the seniors, seeing them daily and assisting them in every way. I didn't just see it as work, but as a relationship I had with everyone. Everyone was different and had a different story. Being that most had Alzheimer's or Dementia, they never remembered who I was, though it broke my heart. I was glad to be there for them everyday. Everyday was really a new day, a new friendship for them, but for me they were old friends. I miss working with the elderly very much. I still remember them very well. Each had their different, wonderful qualities.

Being a Caregiver is a great privilege, you get to share your time with someone who needs it. You get to be a comforter and a helper, and do it with patience. You need to be patient if you want to be a Caregiver, patience is the key. I have known Caregivers that do it for the money, and that's sad, really. It should be done because you know you can make a difference in many lives and you will learn so much from them.
