Caregiving Story

Beverly Wilkes

During my summer stay at my grandmother's house, I began an internship with her job, Caregiving. My duty was to feed Beverly and her husband Charles.

Charles liked me very quickly, but Beverly, stuck in her own ways, would resist me. Once, I started to cry and Beverly went to speak but I couldn't really understand her. I wiped me tears and moved in closer to hear her better, and she said "Had I known you were that easy to break down and cry I would have just eaten the damn soup but it's horrible! Do you think you can get me some collard greens?" It was a total misunderstanding She did like me--she did not, however, enjoy the soup. For the next three months Beverly, her husband and I learned a lot from one another, mostly me. Things are not always what they seem.
