Caregiving Story

Philip Meagher

I have been with Mr. Meagher for only 5 months, and have grown close to him like a brother. He is a man who is very stubborn, but I do love him like he was my own sibling. However, he is in the hospital for dehydration, and ITU. He went to a rehabilitation home, but ended back up in the hospital for something more serious. I don't want him to go, but if he feels that he is tired of this world; then just like a child would their parent, I will let go. He spoke highly of me to his friends, and family, and they see the caring that I do have for him as an individual and not as a statistic. I love the work that I am doing, and that is why I am pursuing my associate's degree in Administrative Medical Assisting. He is very much in support of my going to school and finishing. Just like the friends that I made along the way during my stint with the home health sector back in Texas, I have a lot of friends that I do still maintain contact with, and they all wish me well in my furthering my education because of my compassion toward people that I am going to see in their experiences, and understanding the shoes I will be in when I get to be their age. I love this line of work, and wouldn't think about doing anything else. People, just because they are elderly, doesn't mean that they don't have rights like everyone else in the world who is young. For one day, those young ones will be looking back and wondering why things were so easy then.
