Caregiving Story

Confidential

As a student nurse, I have had amazing experiences working with elderly people at a nursing home and various hospitals in Chicago. One of the most challenging experiences I have had was with a 70-year-old patient who had some form of dementia. This patient was unpredictable in mood changes and at times violent to the caregivers. I was frightened at times, however, it was touching and an emotional experience to have a one-on-one interaction by feeding, changing, cleaning and transferring this patient. Another patient I have had during one of my clinical experiences was an 80-year-old patient that had just past away. I cleaned the patient up and made her look clean and beautiful before the family came in to see her. It was very emotional and difficult but I did my best to accomplish my tasks as a student nurse and as a caring human being.
