I have a felony on my record but it was not against a child or elderly person. It was a long time ago--will this affect my chances of getting a job as a caregiver?

Yes, this may affect your chances of becoming a caregiver, but it varies from agency to agency and will also depend upon if the felony was more than 7 years ago as federal law allows information to be viewed for only this time period. Each agency has different policies for hiring, but most reputable agencies will do a background check on all caregiver applicants and many of those agencies will not consider any applicants with a felony - it doesn't matter if it was, or was not, against a child or elderly person. At Home Care Assistance we have a rigorous screening process for all applicants to be considered for employment.  In addition, you can check the state background check laws which will over-ride the federal background check law requirements (called the FCRA), as sometimes states allow companies to go back further than 7 years and you can find this information on Caregiverlist.com

My boyfriend has a felony, and we live in Florida, what is the law in Florida? He has no violent crime, and nothing against elderly or children. I was told he can get it expunged. Will he still be able to work in HHA or caretaker?
