Caregiving Story

Mary Romani

I began caregiving for my great aunt. I have cared for her for 2 years when I lived in Illinois. She had a mild heart attack so she needed extra help, she wasn't able to bathe herself or feed herself, so I would come over and help her. She used to be able to do everything until the heart attack, so it was sad to see her helpless. I was there at least 3 days a week unless she needed me more. I would take her to the doctors, grocery store, pick up medication, helped with the cooking, laundry and cleaning. Some times I would let my emotions get the best of me because we have been very close since I was born and I hated seeing her in this position, but I just kept thinking of the happy times we had together to make me laugh and smile to make me forget about how she is today. I now live in Arizona so she has other family members to care for her but I call her on a daily basis.
